Mike here: On 28 March 2004 I was a guest at the Laguna Woods Astronomy Club. The evening was clear and many members had their telescopes set up. One of the things I did was to demonstrate how to take an astrophotograph using a handheld camera (afocal technique). Here are two taken with a Casio Exilim EX-S2 digital camera. Both were taken through a LX200GPS-10".

This Venus.

This is Saturn. It shows what can happen if you forget to turn off the flash! Saturn is visible above the white dot (reflection).

But these photos show how easy it can be to take photographs with almost any digital camera.
