Subject: Autostar 494 Aux bus (506 replacement) demystified Sent: Saturday, April 5, 2008 16:10:28 From: Gene Chimahusky (lynol1000@yahoo.com) I recently had some free time to dig deep into the Aux bus of the AS and the potential of an 'only available from Meade' 506 cable alternative for the 494. The following is a link to a very simple homebrew interface using a PPT port (schematics, 3 resistors and 1 cheap chip) and VBS code snippets for proof of concept. I can listen to, talk to and get responses from the AS using this. Is is complete, not even close, but has way more than enough info to show it can be done. http://home.comcast.net/~lynol1000/as_494/as494_i2c_bus.htm For what its worth, I had done the 'death and life of an AS494' back in 2002. http://home.comcast.net/~lynol1000/as_494_gc/index.html Gene
Subject: PIC based 506 clone for the Autostar 494 - Aux bus (506 replacement) demystified Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 04:23:27 From: Gene Chimahusky (lynol1000@yahoo.com) I added an update to the page with schematic and source code for a Microchip PIC based 'almost' clone of the 506, now via the serial port from the PC. http://home.comcast.net/~lynol1000/as_494/as494_i2c_bus.htm Gene
