I recently had some free time to dig deep into the Aux bus of the AS and
the potential of an 'only available from Meade' 506 cable alternative
for the 494.

The following is a link to a very simple homebrew interface using a PPT
port (schematics, 3 resistors and 1 cheap chip) and VBS code snippets
for proof of concept. I can listen to, talk to and get responses from
the AS using this. Is is complete, not even close, but has way more than
enough info to show it can be done.

I added an update to the page with schematic and source code for a
Microchip PIC based 'almost' clone of the 506, now via the serial port
from the PC.
