GUEST PLANETARY ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY

Last updated: 27 September 2005

Some ETX users have sent me examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site. You will also find astrophotography examples on the Helpful Information - Astrophotography page.

The Mars photo is avi's of 1min. 45sec. Taken with a etx 125 and a sac 7 ccd using a meade apo 140 2x tele that I just got in the mail. These were processed in registax 3 and the only clean up in adobe 6.0 was I added 17% midtones 17% shadows and I darkened the photo's 25%.

had a chance last night to take a few pics of Mars with my Meade ETX 105PE using the LPI and a 2x barlow, but i have a question about the orientation and features of the picture. I stacked 130 pics using Registax and increased the sharpness a little in photoshop. Now when using the LPI I have always inserted it how it says in the manual (with the cord part facing towards the OTA). I did vertically flip this picture in Photoshop b/c I thought that the true orentation of Mars is with that polar cap region to the south?....Im just wondering if you may know with the configuration the raw pictures were taken with the LPI cable facing up the OTA if North, South, East, and West are correct on the non processed image or not? And do you know any of these fetures in the picture...roughly the longitude of the picture or where I may find some good Mars maps? It was taken on 9-25-05 at roughly 12am EST from Miami, Fl. Thank you Much for all your work and dedication to this most excellent web site!,

I just bought a 5*Telextender at Scopetronix. Used it this night for Mars. And guess what, the result is incrideble (for an ETX90!). Watch also which magnification I can make. It's 'easy' to get a small Mars, but it's much harder to get a big Mars in good resolution. You can't magnify a small Mars with Photoshop to this format without loosing resolution, thats why the 5*Xtender is used (and it has good optics).

I got my ETX-125 back in July, and have been enjoying it when the weather permits good viewing. I've been trying to take some plant pictures, I've taken some of Jupiter, but they didn't turn out very good. Jupiter is very low in the evening sky and it creates viewing and picture taking problems, I assume it's due to the earths atmosphere? Mars in the next plant to rise in the evening sky over the next few months. I finally took my best picture last Saturday of Mars, using my Canon digital camera and afocal method. Thanks for the great web site, I've learned a lot about my ETX-125 from you.

Here a Mars from the ETX90. It's really a difficult planet for ETX90 (very smal to get detail).

I managed to get a hold of a second hand LPI imager and have attached an image from my first early morning attempt at capturing Mars --- could use more improvement. The image did not turn out so well when using AstroVideo to capture Mars with the LPI. Using LPI Imaging seemed to work the best for now.

After a little astro dip I put my ETX outside again. Mars still very difficult with ETX90. Seeing problems and low in the sky (or I have to wait till 4 o'clock am, than I am asleep :-)

Here is my first try on Neptune.
Neptune

This is a very early Saturn, very low in the east before dawn (bad seeing conditions). Unfortunately the rings are not anymore open wide. The North pole of the planet is now evident.

Last night I managed to put my repaired ETX-105 through it's paces as it was the first really clear night in Derby for ages!!!!! The scope was powered via a mains adaptor and the GOTO and tracking was superb. Attached is a picture of Mars taken with the ETX-105, Meade LPI and 2x Barlow. The bigger picture is the same but with the exposure and processing details on it as well.
