GUEST LUNAR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY |
Many ETX users have sent examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site.

I thought I'd send this shot in because it's kind of interecting. I took it on 12/4, and noticed what looked like a pair of eyes in Clavius...the light was hitting it just right to highlight the craters in it.
This is actually a mosaic of 2 Astrostacked pictures. It was taken with the Quickcam VC at prime focus of my ETX-90.

I'm sending two snaps from a video.
One of them shows two small craters that I have not identified in a map.
(Maybe they are easy to identify but I'm new in this hobby.)

Great Site. Thanks. This is mij first shot of the moon on 3 dec. 2000 with
my ETX90 e.p. 26 mm and my brandnew Sony Cybershot DSC P1. The lens of this
camera is much smaller in diameter than the Sony Cybershot 505 witch I
trided first. Now I can get the hole moon in one shot. The 505 has a perfect
Carl Zeiss lens but the diameter is about 4 centimeter so you have zoom 5 x.
I trided first the scopetronic adapter but now I place the camera on a
second tripod behind the ETX tripod and use the motor of the etx to get the
moon in the middel of the LCD sreen of the camera. In photoshop I give it a
little bit more contast and a little blue in the color balance.
Kind Regards Marius van Leeuwen The Netherlands |

I took this picture tonight, a little chilly in upstate New York but it was clear so I had to go for it.I used my digital Toshiba PDR - M4 camera held up to the 26mm plossi eyepiece of my Meade ETX125-EC, I enhanced the photo a little using the Image Expert software that came with the camera. Jim

I really like the attracted moon images. I took over 150 shots tonight and learn a little more on take photos via the eyepiece. I increased the shutter to reduce the exposure a little to show more detail on the moons surface. I also used the remote control on the Olympus camera to eliminate any vibrations.

The attached 2 photos were taken with different eye pieces, 26mm and a 9.7mm I tried to take a picture of the same spot on the moon. I took this collage of two photos with my ETX-90, a 20mm eyepiece, a CKC
Power CoolPix adapter, the Meade Basic camera adapter, and a Nikon
CoolPix 990. Both exposures were around 1/30 sec. Other than scaling the
images down from the original 2048 x 1536, and combining them in
PhotoShop, they are unmodified.

Great site Mike, so much info! Here are my first images of the full moon using my ETX90-EC. Taken on July 15, 2000 at 22:00 during my wife's birthday party using a Pentax ME attached to a scopetronix camera adapter through a Meade 26mm eyepiece on Kodak Gold 100 ASA. I took the exposure using the hat trick method.

I love your site and have visited many times. I have attached a
couple of recent shots of the moon taken with my ETX 90 and a Starlight
Express MX916. I normally use the CCD with my LX200 but the moon was
almost full and it was too bright to get any good images. I brought out
the ETX90 and grabbed a few using a 50% neutral density filter at 1/100
second. These were taken in Los Angeles where we have terrible light and
air pollution to deal with. Thanks for the great work on the site!

Attached is my first astro-photo taken on Tuesday 10th October, around 9pm
at home in Ossett, UK.
Photo taken with a Pretek DC-600 digital camera, 604 x 480 pixels, hand held
through the 26mm standard eyepiece on my etx90ec.
This is to give encouragement to anyone who wants to try eyepiece
projection. The camera is very basic and has auto exposure. I used the high
quality setting, flash off. This is the raw photo without any processing.

This is my first attempt to photograph the moon. I took the photo Oct. 10, 2000. I guess I just got lucky because all I did was set the scope and camera up and this was the image I got when I focused it. I used a modified Quickcam VC. I used 2.5" ABS Black plastic end caps with the PC Board of the Quickcam mounted in it. It looks very similar to that SAC IV CCD camera. Right now, the camera is uncooled. This pic of the moon is unprocessed.

I'd first like to say thanks for your great site! It has been
an enormous help. I'm attaching my first picture of the Moon. Today, I
just got my goods from Scopetronix. The picture was taken 10 minutes
after I attached my Sony PC100 DV camcorder to my ETX 90. I used a
Scopetronix camera adapter and a 37 mm T-Ring adapter for afocal
exposures with a 26 mm eyepiece. They were taken on Oct, 11 6:35pm Tokyo
time. I'd like some advice on how to stop the vignetting. I took some
pictures with the camcorder zoomed but they weren't so clear.
Thanks Bill
Mike here: To avoid or reduce vignetting, sometimes zooming the camera lens to get it closer to the eyepiece will help.

Here is a shot I just took with my Epson 850Z digital camera and my ETX 125. I think an albedo feature is visible in the upper right (bright white area in a small crater). I have attatched an image of the moon that I took a little while back. It is of the crater Theophilus. I took it through my ETX-90/EC with a Canon AE-1 SLR camera on Kodak 200 speed film at 112x eyepiece projection. It is actually made with 2 images. Each exposure was 1 second long. They were taken about 2 seconds apart. Then I processed the images using Microsoft Picture It Express. One of the images I turned into B&W. Then I used AstroStack to stack the 2 images together. I then processed the composite image with Adobe PhotoShop 5.0. This is by far my best image yet!

First of all, thanks for your very informative website.
I own a second-hand ETX-90 EC for a few months now.
Very recently I also was able to buy a Nikon Coolpix 990.
I think these two are a good match, also for terrestrial use (small+light
= transportable)
With these two, I took this picture of the moon, yesterday (1st of october,
around 20.30 local time in Belgium).
Exposure 1/8th of a second. There was no guiding of the telescope.
I used "manual" eyepiece-projection through the standard 26 mm eyepiece.
I definitely need some adaptor rings, a remote control for the camera
etc.!
The camera was put on fixed focus. Focusing the telescope was done manually
while watching the display of the camera.
Afterwards, some cropping and sharpening of the image was done in Photoshop
on a Mac.
Well with some luck I managed to take some acceptable pictures and I
know there is room for improvement.

Here's a picture I took of the moon a couple of months ago. I used my ETX125EC with the standard 25mm ocular. The camera I used is a Casio QV3000 3.34 megapixel hand-held to the eyepiece. I did not do any digital processing to the photo. Since I'm new to this whole astrophotography thing I'd appreciate any suggestions. I think this shot is overexposed but I'm not sure. I assume the vignetting is from the camera being held to the eyepiece (eyepiece projection isn't it?).
Mike here: Only slightly overexposed. I did some editing (levels and sharpening) on it and it improved somewhat. If your camera has a zoom lens, try zooming in. On my Ricoh that moves the camera lens closer to the eyepiece, reducing or even eliminating the vignetting.

Don't laugh too loud at my first ever attempt. This was taken with a
Sony Digital Mavica through a Meade Digital Series (or Department

looking for some definite improvements in quality. When I take some pics
on it, I'll send 'em on.

HI! my name is IDO I'm 16 years old.
this is a multiple moon colecction that I took over 6 months!
It was made by original photos.
I used the ETX astronomical telescope (a 90 mm diamatar) for this spectacular moon chart.
the film was: fuji 800asa the exposures times: was betwin 1sec. to 1/1000. *enjoy! have a wonderfull summer!! :) IDO |
Brice D. Hornback (bdh@cyberbound.net) |
Here's a shot of the Moon taken on 05/04/98 with a modified Color
QuickCam through a Meade ETX.
Modifications: I removed the Color QuickCam from it's housing. Removed the lens (unscrews) from the camera...then removed the filter from the camera. I screwed the lens holder (not the lens) back on top of the CCD chip. I then drilled a hole in the lid of a coffee creamer lid just big enough for the "tube" to fit through. A camera adapter fits snugly inside the coffee creamer lid and this attaches to the #64 T-Adapter, which fits onto the back of the telescope. I used the QuickPic software included with the QuickCam. |

I just bought an SAC-IV astronomical camera and am very happy with the
results. The camera now optionally comes with a "T"-ring interface for
a little more $ than the original. I took the attached nine pictures in
a few minutes and made a mosaic with "Picture Window", a low priced
photographic software. Each picture was taken at 640X480 resolution so
the original is much bigger and has much more detail. Included is one
frame of the nine. The camera has a USB interface making it very easy to
use in the field with a laptop computer. The ETX-125EC tracked
perfectly. The pictures were taken at primary focus.

The weather where I live's been dreadful since I can remember - wettest
April on record, wettest May since 1983. But the skies cleared around 11:30
last Thursday so I wheeled out the trusty ETX, polar aligned it by aiming it
roughly at Polaris, and took the attached image with my Fuji FX1500 (zoomed
out to maximum), 26mm eyepiece and the Scopetronix adapter bracket. The
camera was on full-auto, plus self-timer to let the shaking die down. I was
pleased with the amount of detail, e.g., in the crater ramparts of
Theophilus.

I bought my ETX90EC on Saturday and on Sunday 7th May took the attached
photo with my Nikon 950 digital camera. The picture is actually two photos
joined together. Selecting Shutter priority I exposed for 1/8 sec at f3.5,
The camera was held in place with a tripod clamp. Prior to owning the ETX I
had bought a Tasco 4 1/2 inch reflector and very nearly give up astronomy
as the quality was so disapointing. If any of the visitors to your site
have any doubts let me assure them the ETX90ec is a fantastic telescope,
the attached picture does not do the telescope quality justice.

telescope, the film I used for this spectacular shot is 1600asa
and the exposure time is unknown (i lost my notes).

Reading your homepage i found your offering to forward ETX pictures plus
addon Equipement info to you for eventually use on your homepage.
So, please find attached a few sample pictures which were made with
ETX125EC plus autostar and OLYMPUS 2020Z Digitalcamera (1600x1200),
connected with a homemade
device directly to the ETX in eyepieceprojection mode. The Olympus has a
nice infrared remote control which allows you to make picures without
touching the ETX.

This shot was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel at Prime Focus. The film I
used was Kodak 100. I exposed it with the "hat trick" method, moving a
piece of cardboard away and back as fast as I could. This was only my
third time out with the camera and I must say I am extremely pleased
with the results.
Question for you as well -- Are the shots in the Astrophotography Gallery yours? Thanks for your awesome site, Shawn Rakestraw Mike here: All the photos in the Astrophotography Gallery are mine. Those in the Guest Astrophotography Gallery are from contributors like yourself. |

thank you for your very interesting web site !
In december 1999, I purchased a Meade ETX-90 EC; it is my first astro telescope. Since 3-4 weeks I try astro photography with the moon in prime focus and with an eyepiece in the Meade T-adapter (I use a piece of paper to hold it in position). This astrophoto is with the Super Plossl 12.4 mm in the T-adapter (at an unmeasured distance from the film plane). The time of exposure is unknown (manual occultation); I used a Fujicolor Superia 200 iso. If you have any suggestions, I will very pleased to received it. |

I tried using my Fuji MX2700 handheld against
the eyepiece. Worked pretty well.

HI, my name is IDO. I took these pics of the moon with my
pentax k-1000 camera. I used a 800 asa film
while the motor of my ETX telescope was runing.
The time exposure was 1/250sec (just with the full moon pic).
I hope to get even better results next time.

mediocre!!!

Luna035.jpg I've posted photos with an italian caption...I'll translate to you!!! All the photos were taken with a Meade Etx and a modificated quick cam pro. The pictures of the moon were taken at the prime focus, the planets ones with a 2X Vixen Deluxe Barlow. This was my first night with such a camera...Note that the seeing was nothing special, and the moon was rised just by two hours!!! The border of the moon was boiling like oil with chips....

I've attached a .jpeg of the moon taken with the ETX + 18mm Zeiss ep (at an unmeasured distance from the film plane) + Nikon N2000 w/Fuji Provia F100 slide film @ 1/4 sec. The new Provia F has extremely fine grain and high resolution, allowing the virtues of both the ETX lens/mirror/mirror, and eyepiece to be realized. The unfortunate downside: slow speed. However, this film can be pushed two stops to ASA 400 with little or no loss of detail! The Astronomy obsession has roared back with a vengeance, as come February, I'll be getting a Great Polaris mount. To this, I intend to attach a plate large enough for my ETX guidescope, and at least one camera/telephoto. I have become increasingly interested in wide-field photography using big telephotos and so need a mount with greater weight handling ability. Are you set for the lunar eclipse on the 20th? I have not worked out the details yet, but plan to have three cameras shooting: one thru the ETX (epp), one on a 600mm f5.6 ED telephoto, and one on a 200mm f2.8 tele. So, I'll be busy. Until then, I'll be pondering details like background, etc. |
