iPhone Venus, Jupiter

Posted: 21 January 2025

The sky was clear on Saturday, 18 January, and Sunday, 19 January 2025, but I did not open the observatory either night.

Open: Monday, 20 January 2025, 1812 MST
Temperature: 59°F
Session: 2064
Conditions: Mostly clear

Equipment:
12" f/8 LX600 w/StarLock
2" 24mm UWA eyepiece
2" 9mm 100° eyepiece

Camera:
iPhone 15 Pro Max

1817 MST: LX600 ON, StarLock OFF, High Precision OFF.

Viewed Saturn, 102X.

Viewed Venus, 102X and 271X.

Attached the LiDAR Cover on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and mounted the iPhone on the 2" 9mm eyepiece using the 3-axis adapter. I did an afocal 271X 10 seconds video recording using the Apple Final Cut Camera app (ISO 64, 1/2000sec, 240fps, 1X lens). This is a stack of 2549 video frames.

I then used NightCap Camera for this afocal 271X image (ISO 55, 1/640sec, 1X lens).

Viewed Jupiter, 271X. All four Galilean Moons were visible in the field-of-view.

Mounted the iPhone with LiDAR Cover on the 2" 9mm eyepiece. Did an afocal 271X 10 seconds video recording using the Apple Final Cut Camera app (ISO 2000, 1/500sec, 240fps, 1X lens). This is a stack of 2546 video frames.

I then took this NightCap Camera afocal 271X image of Jupiter and the four moons (ISO 55, 1/7sec, 1X lens).

Viewed Mars, 271X. It was too low over a roof for good viewing. I tried imaging it but seeing was not good enough.

Viewed Mars, 102X.

Viewed M42 (Great Nebula in Orion), 102X.

Viewed NGC1977 (Running Man Nebula), 102X. I used one of my DLSR images of the Running Man Nebula on the front cover of my autobiography Finding my Way to the Stars.

It was getting cold and breezy so I ended this session.

1907 MST: LX600 OFF.

Close: Monday, 20 January 2025, 1915 MST
Temperature: 43°F
Session Length: 1h 03m
Conditions: Clear, breezy
