University of Tennessee Science Institute Visit
Posted: 16 September 2017
On 19 August 2017, as part of the Sky & Telescope Tour Group for the Total Solar Eclipse, we had a daytime visit to the University of Tennessee Science Institute and its observatory.
The Science Institute is a large research complex. There is a small observatory on the campus by a lake. Inside the dome a solar telescope was set up for viewing. Outside of observatory a Personal Solar Telescope (PST) was available. I helped with the viewing through the PST.
After the group finished observing the Sun, there were some talks by the UTSI staff:
We then adjourned for a refreshment break with local delicacies:
There was a talk about the Total Solar Eclipse given by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Chief Scientist. That was followed by a talk by the Principle Investigator of the Voyager I mission, which was about to celebrate 40 years of successful voyaging through and beyond the Solar System.
