Venus Occultation
Posted: 7 December 2015
Sunday, 6 December 2015, dawned clear but clouds came in mid-day. Missed the last good ISS pass this sequence.
Had hoped to photograph Comet C/2013 US10 Catalina near Venus and the waning crescent Moon before dawn on Monday, 7 December, but clouds prevented it.
A little before sunrise on Monday I took these Nikon D7200 DSLR photos of the conjunction of Venus and the Moon (prior to the Venus occultation):
FL 30mm (Venus and Moon at top):
FL 600mm:
I did not open the observatory for the Venus occultation due to the clouds. However, some clearing of the clouds occurred mid-morning as the time of the occultation approached. I used my new Tamron 150-600mm lens at FL 600mm for these photos (slightly cropped from the full size image).
Disappearance at 0925 MST:
Moon with Venus occulted at 1111 MST:
Reappearance at 1115 MST:
If the last image above seems to be a little blurry, that's because there was a disturbance: a jet airliner passed near the Moon. This next photo shows the plane at the lower right:
