Visit to Mt Wilson Observatory - 2022
Posted: 16 October 2022
Friday, 7 October 2022, Mike, his wife Laurraine, and Mike's niece Linda McMahon from New Jersey visited Mt Wilson Observatory in California. Mike and Laurraine had been to Mt Wilson before, but it was Linda's first visit. This special visit to observe using the historic 60" telescope was sponsored by Explore Scientific.
The sky was clear when we arrived at Mt Wilson. We were met by our host Scott Roberts of Explore Scientific.
David Levy welcomed everyone to Mt Wilson via Zoom. He was followed by talks from Anshul Puri and Cameron Gillis.
After lunch we walked to the 100" telescope dome. On the way we passed the 150-Foot Solar Tower, appropriately backlit by the Sun. Mike and Linda recreated a photo taken in 1983 with Mike and his brothers Harold (Linda's father) and Paul.
We spent a long time inside the 100" telescope dome.
The views from outside the dome were spectacular.
Next, we had talks by Steve Edberg, Chris Burns, and John Schwartz.
After the talks we went to the 60" telescope dome for a night of observing.
The constellation of Orion greeted us as we left the 60" telescope observatory dome after a wonderful visit to Mt Wilson Observatory.
Many thanks to Explore Scientific and the staff at Mt Wilson Observatory for this great experience.
