GUEST LUNAR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
[Home!]
Last updated: 24 December 2005

Many ETX users have sent examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site.

Thought I'd send you a couple of images of the Moon taken last week end.
They were both taken with my ETX-90 ec in polar mode using my home made polar wedge from my back garden in Derbyshire U.K. I used a Vesta pro webcam set at 640 x 480. The avi's were processed in Registax and additional processing gone with Arcsoft.
The first image is of Mare Crisium and is a stack of 401 frames from an avi of 603.

The second is of the crater Petavius and it's surrounding area. It is a stack of 614 frames from a total of 1030.

I've owned an etx-125 for about two years, but took up astrophotography in earnest only this fall. I use a philips toucam pro webcam, K3ccd tools to drive it from a laptop, and registax and photoshop to develop the images. About three weeks ago on a clear night I took my gear to the roof, (I live in Manhattan) and set up. When I went to turn on the telescope, I found that the power switch was already on, and the batteries were drained, again. (I'm obsessively careful of the switch these days.) The night was too good to waste, so I aimed the telescope manually, and let the moon drift past. This shot is 1350 frames over two minutes. Registax will let me stack 350 frames before the alignment slips out of frame. I made four expanded images, and sharpened them up in photoshop. Then, using autostitch, www.autostitch.net, software to work its magic, I assembled them into a long panorama, and cleaned up the result again in photoshop. The video on the screen was boiling, wind kept shifting the camera, focus would come and go, but the results are amazing. This is a bit oversharpened, I know, but I wanted to bring the rays out. I'm very, very happy with the results, and look forward to many more sessions on the roof.

as we had cold weather outside in Southern Germany (9 degrees below freezing) I reanimated 'comfortable astronomy' with my ETX-70AT from inside the room behind a double-glass window. Copernikus: 2005-12-10, ETX-70AT with 2x barlow, ToUCam pro at prime focus, 40 out of 1200 frames

Clavius: 2005-12-10, ETX-70AT with 2x barlow, ToUCam pro at prime focus, 300 out of 1200 frames Still wondering what can be done with this litte scope and 'comfortable setup'...

Here is a composite photo of the moon taken on December 7th, 2005. This photo was reduced in resolution but is made up of around 12 images taken by a Meade DSI through an ETX125. This was also taken using Meade's lastest firmware and software release for AutoSTAR. Much improvement over the old stuff!

Here are a couple of extra moon shots taken back in late Spring 2005 using a Meade DSI through an ETX125.

Waited 2 years to get this kind of picture. The plane was too quick to focus the moon in time (saw it coming), so maybe in the future a better one, but this one is my first. ETX90 - 40 mm Plossl - 2020Z

Capturing Hortensius Domes is very difficult because the conditions of illumination are not favourable during every lunar month. This photo was captured after two consecutive unsuccessful attempts. Some vents are visible on the domes (the summit pits are 1.5 km wide). Meade ETX 125 5" Mak, Atik 1c, 2x apo Barlow, IR cut, Registax, 50% of 821 frames.

I took this picture of the Moon on Sep 11 2005 at 21.30 from Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was taken with a Meade ETX-125 scope using LPI camera. The imagen was made by putting together all the small images obtained from Meade LPI software, using CorelDraw 12. I'm 16 years old. I think your site is the greatest for my ETX. Thank you.

The inner rille of Vallis Alpes is a challenging target for ETX 125 and generally for appertures below 8". (More information at: http://www.glrgroup.org/rilles/vallisalpes.htm ) In this image the rille was captured despite poor seeing conditions.
