GUEST PLANETARY ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
[Home!]
Last updated: 27 December 2006

Some ETX users have sent me examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site. You will also find astrophotography examples on the Helpful Information - Astrophotography page.

Yesterday evening I took a look at Uranus with the ETX-70AT. Well, you can't expect to see any details. The GOTO pointed me directly to where I wanted to go (the only brighter object south of Lambda Aquarii) but I checked it twice and could be sure to see the small disc of a planet only just 'below' of 6mm eyepiece (about 60x magnification) The color was only a bit of green-blueish. ETX-70AT with 2x barlow lense and ToUCam pro at prime focus, 500x0.25s exposures resized by 2 at post-processing. Mmh - not much to see on the 3.6 arcsec disc - but 'having done it'.

Long time reader, first time poster. And dittos to all the wonderful comments about your site and the efforts you put forth. I purchased my ETX-125 UHTC from OPT in February 06. I had also purchased the LPI and then shortly thereafter, the DSI-C. I have read many great tips and tricks from your site and also purchased a number of astronomy books to forward my new hobby. Of course, astrophotography is quite a challenge, but is also rewarding too. I've got the basics figured out, but still need to get deeper in to image processing. I will continue to use your site to sharpen my (very dull) skills.

For the first time i managed to photograph cloud features on Venus with ETX. And these days Venus is only 10 arcseconds across. Repeated efforts with ToUcam Pro II and Atik 1c failed, but my new DMK 21BF04 monochrome firewire camera proved to be very sensitive to the UV wavelengths. The telescope was hidden in the shadow to avoid dangerous direct sunlight.

Here in the UK we dont get too many good seeing nights. I took this photo of Jupiter a couple of weeks ago on one of the clearer nights. It was taken using my ETX 125 EC with a modified toucam pro with an UV- IR filter, The image was built from a 45 second video processed with Registax. The image has not been prodded or pushed, only cropped to reduce the overall file size.
I live on the fourth floor and the image was taken from my balcony. If I can do it, anyone can.
Love your website and your book.

Please find images of Jupiter on 3 consecutive days. The 4th was the worst seeing Conditions of the 3 which is a shame as it looked good around 9pm but light clouds Were stopping me getting a good image. By the time the cloud lifted the seeing Had deteriorated. Conditions on the 3rd were very good but again clouds rolled in shortly afterwards. Conditions on the 2nd were fair.
