GUEST LUNAR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
[Home!]
Last updated: 16 June 2010

Many ETX users have sent examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site.

I got home a bit late tonight (lot of running about town after work), but got out my ETX-90 just in time to grab a few afocal shots of the Moon. There is so much water around I didn't want to run mains leads for the C8 out across the yard in order to get to a spot that would see the Moon for proper imaging. The Moon had a nice conjunction with Venus, but my images are a bit motion blurred tonight. Earthshine was very bright again tonight.
I have made a similar montage as last nights of the images with the refractor. Tonights are taken through 25mm UO orthoscopic and 32mm Celestron Omni plossl eyepieces with Fuji A800 handheld to the 90mm Meade ETX-90/RA at around 0620UT June 15.

Here's an older image that I took of the moon on 11/27/09 with the Meade ETX 125PE and a Meade LPI. Nothing special about it except that I thought it looked nice. A facebook friend from England commented that it had a shot of the "Straight Wall". I hadn't even heard of the "Straight Wall" until he mentioned it. Obviously, I'm still climbing the learning curve. Hope that you consider it worthy for your web site.

Attached is a Plato Crater image that I took on 11/27/09. It was done with the Meade ETX 125PE and a Meade LPI. I did not use the 2X Barlow for this shot - I wish I had. It is a single image from the LPI with no stacking and just some slight processing in Photoshop. The region is near Plato crater which is such a fascinating area. Afterwards, I learned about the small craterlets within the crater itself and now one of my goals is to capture those. Also, the image is shifted horizontally and I did not compensate for the shift. I hope you find it worthy for your site.

About a year ago I got into the incredible hobby of astrophotography. I was a longtime astronomy fan already but it was only last year I stared observing. In those period I have been doing some Lunar Imaging and few Planetary recordings of Saturn. I have gotten great feedback so far from what I got out a 90 mm telescope(the Meade ETX 90), so I thought you might want to publish some of my images on your site, I would be honored.

Last night I went out to try imaging the moon with my ETX-90 mounted on an Orion Astroview mount. The model of the ETX I have is the original ETX-90 from 1997. I have had so much problems with the tracking of objects on the original ETX fork mount. The Orion Astroview tracks wonderfully with the ETX mounted on it. Anyway, attached to this email are two stacked moon pics taken with a Canon Powershot SD1200 IS.
For the wide field moon shot:
Exposure: 1\60 Sec
ISO: 100
#of stacked frames: 10

For the zoomed in moon shot:
Exposure: 1\40 Sec
ISO: 200
#of stacked frames: 13

Last night I was using my ETX-90/RA to do some visual observing, which I still find it a very nice telescope to use! Here is an afocal shot of the Moon on 2010 Feb 22. It is a mosaic of three images stitched with Microsoft ICE and taken with a Fuji A800 camera hand-held to a 32 mm eyepiece.
I have a website now with my lunar images on it, mainly taken with the Meade LPI and C8 though. It is at: http://moonscience.yolasite.com if you are interested in taking a look when you get time.

Please find attached an image taken using the Meade ETX 125 and LPI of the Lunar Southern Highland region. This was the only good image I managed to obtain on a night of relatively poor seeing and lots of cloud. The original intention was to stack a number of images but his was by far the best single shot and I was amazed at the clarity and performance of both the telescope and the camera.
Keep up the good work!
