GUEST LUNAR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
Last updated: 30 June 2011
[Home!]

Many ETX users have sent examples of their astrophotography. If you have some examples you would like included here please send me a description of how you made the astrophotos and a copy of the images as GIF or JPEG files (due to internet email gateway issues, please send only one image file per message). Send to etx@me.com. Alternatively, if you have created your own web page with your examples please let me know and I'll include a link to your site.

As soon as I woke up I grabbed my ETX-90 telescope and tried to get an image of the Moon. Seeing was very bad though. I tried afocal and the LPI and since each ended up with a different result I have put both side by side. I think it was just a bit too daylight and hazy for good contrast this morning.

This morning at 7:40am the Moon was visible after days of rain, so because the ground was so muddy I used the ETX-90 to get a quick mosaic of the Moon. My laptop keep crashing envisage but it stabilised after a while. I have included a colour version even though the sky was blue which I have removed the some of the blue colour. The mono is just colour converted to B&W but is at full size (the colour is at 75%). It was bit of a rush job so quality not the best under the conditions (daylight, slight ash and crashing software). But I was pleased to get the image and see the ol' Moon again after a couple of days hiding behind clouds.

Saludos.

In between rain showers the sky cleared (right as dinner was ready), so the only option I had was to grab a quick afocal shot of the Moon through the ETX-90 and 32 mm eyepiece with my compact camera. I would have liked a proper image, but this is just a single frame. First view of the Moon this lunation with the run of cloudy weather.
But think it is worth sharing anyway.

I also got this photo of the Earthshine plus a couple of stars, in Leo I believe, with the ETX when I took the other shot tonight. It is also hand held, and probably a 3 or 4 second exposure so some slight blurring.
Using "The Sky" level 1, I have tried to identify them, and think that is correct. One thing that could be useful is they could be used to estimate the brightness of lunar features, especially Aristarchus crater. Perhaps a variable star person can give an exact estimate, but my guess is around mag 8.3 for Aristarchus tonight. Perhaps a useful method for estimating its brightness if the stars and Moon align?

here's a photo I captured today with my 5" Meade, 26mm (I think) eyepiece and my Panasonic Lumix camera. Notice the X mark, I never knew it was there before.
